Program Overview
The Microbiology PhD prepares students for careers that may involve basic scientific research, teaching and mentoring, and/or more applied science.
This program is ideal for intellectually rigorous students who aspire to careers in academia, government or industry, whether they want to focus on ground-breaking research, training the next generation of scientific leaders, or both. You’ll engage in active research and subsequent data analyses in fields like bacteriology, mycology, immunology, virology, and/or microbial ecology.
Although our program doesn’t have formal concentrations, the Department of Microbiology does offer a graduate certificate in cell biology imaging and quantification, helping you gain skills that will set you apart in this rapidly growing, cutting-edge area of science that has applications in many arenas. In addition to the lab-based mentoring, our program allows students to engage in courses in a variety of areas, allowing for a custom, tailored training program to fit their future career goals.
