Fall Book Party Celebrates Arts and Sciences Authors
The College of Arts and Sciences Division of Arts and Humanities community gathered in early November to celebrate 25 faculty members’ recent accomplishments of published works at an inaugural Fall Book Party. Faculty authors and others chatted about their books over refreshments at the early evening soiree, which took place November 8 in the Jack E. Reese Galleria of the Hodges Library.
“I was very pleased that our first annual book party was a success, offering an opportunity for the authors to meet colleagues and talk about their scholarship,” said Beauvais Lyons, divisional dean for arts and humanities.
The authorship honored in the event represented career milestones for these faculty members—built on years of committed research, travel, reflection, and review. The works represented all of the departments in the division, and also featured faculty works from the Departments of Sociology and Psychology.
The books shared at the party mirror the wide range of research and creative opportunities in the college, covering scholarly topics of literature and visual arts, history and philosophy, psychology and religious studies, theater and classics, and world languages and cultures. Organizers look forward to continued camaraderie and networking in future faculty book events with plans to establish this as a new November tradition.
“This has been a tradition in some individual departments, but holding a social gathering to mark the publication of monographs and edited volumes by colleagues from every department in our division, as well as two from the social sciences, was exhilarating,” said Lyons. “We are already considering ways to enhance the event next time.”
