Staying Safe Online

September 14, 2022 by artsciweb

In December 2021, the UT Office of Information Technology conducted a phishing test to determine how many people click on links in spam emails. Of the 5,000 people who received the email scam, 22% click on a link in the email. Were you one of the 1 in 5?

To protect the university community, OIT purchased upgraded Microsoft licenses for all faculty, staff, and students. As of this year, you may have noticed links in your email that are much longer than normal. These are referred to as safe links and provides URL scanning and rewriting of links in inbound email messages in order to reduce the risk of potential phishing or unsafe sites. Learn more about this new security measure.

According to OIT, there are several tricks to spotting a phishing scam. If you receive a suspicious email, first – do not click on the links. Next, forward the email to OIT Abuse at abuse@utk.edu.

Finally, please help your students be aware of phishing scams that may cause them to lose money, as did several UT students during summer. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is too good to be true. Learn more about how to help students take an extra step to stay safe online.

Want more information about staying safe online? Read all about security on the OIT website.
