{"id":237,"date":"2026-05-01T08:09:22","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T12:09:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/artsci.utk.edu\/marcoinstitute\/?p=237"},"modified":"2026-05-01T08:09:23","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T12:09:23","slug":"2020-manuscript-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/artsci.utk.edu\/marco\/2020-manuscript-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"2020 Manuscript Workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">15th Annual Marco Manuscript Workshop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cThe Ends of Manuscripts\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">January 31 and February 1, 2020<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About<a href=\"https:\/\/marco.utk.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Lamb-and-MS-explicit.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1001\" src=\"https:\/\/artsci.utk.edu\/marco\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/05\/Lamb-and-MS-explicit-768x1001-1.jpg\" alt=\"Apocalyptic lamb and text from: British Library, Add MS 19896, f. 3r and f. 32v\" class=\"wp-image-238\" style=\"width:400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/artsci.utk.edu\/marco\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/05\/Lamb-and-MS-explicit-768x1001-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/artsci.utk.edu\/marco\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/05\/Lamb-and-MS-explicit-768x1001-1-230x300.jpg 230w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fifteenth annual Marco Manuscript Workshop will take place Friday, January 31, and Saturday, February 1, 2020, at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this year\u2019s workshop, as a tribute to the 2020 McClung Museum exhibition&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mcclungmuseum.utk.edu\/exhibitions\/visions-of-the-end\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Visions of the End<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;(opening January 31), we will explore the theme \u201cThe Ends of Manuscripts.\u201d We take this theme in the broadest possible sense, including consideration of the \u201cends\u201d of manuscripts \u2013 whether their physical boundaries (colophons and explicits, incomplete texts, extrapolated texts, lost or added leaves, booklets and bindings), their purposes (texts written for particular patrons or communities, texts written for devotional or polemical ends, texts written as responses to other texts, texts prepared for or directed at someone or something), their fates (where texts have ended up, in libraries or private collections, in bindings or trash bins, framed on walls or preserved in digital repositories), or their early coexistence with and gradual replacement by printed books. Like detectives at a crime scene, we often must work backward from the \u201cends\u201d of a manuscript to its life and origins; in these origins there may even lie some intimations of the manuscript\u2019s future demise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As in previous years, the workshop is intended to be more like a class than a conference; participants are encouraged to share new discoveries and unfinished work, to discuss both their successes and frustrations, to offer both practical advice and theoretical insights, and to work together towards developing better professional skills for textual and codicological work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The workshop is organized by Professors Maura K. Lafferty (Classics) and Roy M.
