Metal Casting and Fabrication Undergraduate Certificate 

Develop your artistic and technical metalworking skills through an Undergraduate Certificate in Metal Casting and Fabrication. Our program prepares you to gain practical, hands-on sculpting, molding, casting, and welding skills, equipping you to become a skilled artist or fabricator.

Program Overview

The Metal Casting and Fabrication Undergraduate Certificate teaches techniques in casting, bending, molding, and manipulating bronze and aluminum metals.  

In our program, students are introduced to the processes of metal casting and fabrication and their varied applications in multiple industries as well as in entrepreneurial pursuits.

Students will learn about these processes and applications through coursework focusing on sand and investment casting of aluminum and bronze, various welding techniques, cold connections and engineering of structural components.

Plus, our passionate faculty are dedicated to seeing you succeed, offering one-on-one mentorship that will help you excel and be prepared to show up to the professional world with grit.

Housed in the School of Art, our Metal Casting and Fabrication Undergraduate Certificate offers students unique opportunities to work in some of our many state-of-the-art facilities and studio spaces.  

The Metal Casting and Fabrication Certificate offers students the opportunity to develop specialized skills in state-of-the-art facilities for metalwork and casting.

The School of Art’s 600-foot foundry houses a controlled burn out kiln, two melt furnaces, a sand pit, a monorail system with electric pull chain, and indoor and outdoor work areas.

State-of-the-Art Facilities

Most of the UT School of Art’s facilities are located within the Art + Architecture Building, a 180,540-square-foot, light-filled building designed especially for UT’s Art and Architecture students. Since 1981, the building has evolved into a vibrant center for creative experimentation and inter-disciplinary exchange. With cutting-edge facilities, expansive studios, and shared spaces designed to foster collaboration, it supports ambitious work across all areas of art.

Residences and Workshops

Our art students also benefit from opportunities to attend residences and workshops at various art centers across the country and the world. Recent students have completed summer workshops in local Tennessee areas such as the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Penland School of Crafts, and the Appalachian Center for Craft in Smithville, giving them next-level experiences.

 The Undergraduate Certificate in Metal Casting and Fabrication opens pathways to a unique pool of careers. With opportunities to build, design, and engineer metal components, you’ll find unique opportunities in sculpture, fabrication, manufacturing, and engineering.  

For those more interested in using their skills for art promotion as metal artists, sculptors, visual artists, you’ll find positions in galleries, work as independent artists, or even work in interior design.  

Whatever your unique pathway, our program equips you with practical skills that are transferrable to a variety of fields, whether you enter the art world or find a passion in product design, manufacturing, or, engineering.  

ARTB 245 Metal Fabrication

Introduction to steel as a material for the creation of sculpture. Development of welding techniques, design of cold connections, and engineering of structural components.

ARTB 243 Mold-Making and Casting

Examines possibilities and processes related to mold-making. A variety of casting materials will be explored including metals, wax, rubber, plaster, and ceramic shell.

ARTN 241 Non-Major Intro to Sculpture

Introduction to the materials, concepts, technical processes, and history of sculpture. Materials include wood, plaster, steel, and plastics. This section is for non-art majors who would like an introduction to sculpture.

ARTB 241 Beginning Sculpture

Introduction to the materials, concepts, technical processes, and history of sculpture. Materials include wood, plaster, steel, and plastics.
