Program Overview
Biochemistry and Cellular and Molecular Biology PhD students gain high-level research skills that equip them as experts across multiple disciplines in BCMB.
You will work alongside faculty and conduct research in areas such as molecular genetics, computational biology, biophysics, and more, all while choosing courses ranging from biophysical chemistry to advanced molecular biology and even bioinformatics and neurobiology. Whatever your unique research interests, our PhD program equips you with the skills and knowledge to design, analyze, and interpret the results of biochemical studies, all while gaining hands-on laboratory skills and experience.
This program is ideal for students who are passionate about studying biomolecules and cellular life, and who desire to contribute original research to the greater body of knowledge, whether that’s through academia or industry.
Concurrent Master’s Degree
Our program currently offers PhD students the opportunity to complete a concurrent master’s degree as part of their coursework. That means you will receive a master’s degree in biochemistry and cellular and molecular biology (BCMB) as progress towards your PhD after completing 30 hours of coursework, an exam, and publishing a manuscript in a major scientific academic journal. This opportunity not only accelerates your academic journey but also sets you apart in the job market and beyond.

BCMB students have access to outstanding research infrastructure and facilities, including the Bioanalytical Resource Facility, Biological and Small Molecular Mass Spectrometry Core, Genomics Core, Next-Generation Sequencing Facility, and the Advanced Microscopy and Imaging Center. Students also benefit from extensive collaborations across the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
BCMB faculty also participate in a variety of interdisciplinary research centers and partnerships, including the Genome Science and Technology Program, Tennessee Plant Research Center, Neuroscience Network of East Tennessee Research Center (NeuroNET), and the UT/ORNL Center for Molecular Biophysics. These collaborations provide exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary research, advanced training, and access to world-class scientific expertise and facilities.
All admitted PhD students also receive a graduate assistantship that includes a stipend, tuition waiver, and health insurance benefits, contingent on satisfactory academic progress, meaning you’ll advance your own research and teaching skills while also helping train the next generation of scholars.

BCMB 512 Advanced Molecular Biology
This course introduces students to the regulation of nucleic acid expression and protein activity. Topics covered include nucleic acid structure and function; replication and repair of nucleic acids; gene expression; protein synthesis; post-translational protein modification; mitosis and meiosis; cell cycle and cell growth.
BCMB 615 Special Topics in Biochemistry, Cellular, and Molecular Biology
This course includes topics like biochemical and biophysical methods, mechanisms of enzyme catalysis, gene expression, membrane structure and function, metabolic regulation, physical biochemistry, molecular genetics, cell ultrastructure and physiology, neurobiology, and related topics.
BCMB 605 Neuroscience Journal Club
This course consists of readings and discussions based on current literature in neuroscience.
BCMB 609 Journal Club in Plant Biology
This course consists of readings and discussions based on current literature in plant biology.
