Program Overview

The Field Biology Analytical Techniques graduate certificate trains students to study whole ecosystems and the plants, animals, microorganisms, soils and environmental data they contain using field and statistical methods. 

This program is ideal for students who have an interest in ecology, environmental science, invasive species biology, bioprospecting, one-health and more.

You can take courses in ecological processes and structures, evolutionary biology, plant/animal/microbial ecology, and statistics, all of which prepare you to collect data through geospatial methods, statistical analysis, or field sampling.

What Can You Do with a Graduate Certificate in Field Biology Analytical Techniques After Graduation?

The graduate certificate in Field Biology Analytical Techniques program is an interdisciplinary curriculum housed in the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology. In this program, students acquire knowledge to investigate biological systems using experimentation, data analysis, natural history collections and multiple modelling techniques. Students develop a solid foundation in the theory, application of field techniques, collections research, as well as data analysis skills, to undertake analytical approaches to studying biological systems in nature.

EEB 611 Techniques in Organismal Biology

Exposure and in-depth training in contemporary topics and approaches important to advanced research in organismal biology.

MICR 669 Advanced Techniques in Field Microbiology

Introduction to modern experimental techniques in the observation and data collection of microorganisms and various features of their natural environments.

EEB 601 Natural History Collections Research

Introduces students to cutting-edge collections-based research. Will explore topics such as biodiversity, conservation management, invasive species biology, anthropology, paleontology, ecology, evolution, scientific ethics, and advocacy that are informed by data from natural history collections.

MICR 470 Microbial Ecology

Students will learn about the physiological diversity and taxonomy of microorganisms from natural environments. There will be an emphasis on the functional role of microorganisms in natural and simulated ecosystems.
