Professor Dean is the author of The Time It Takes to Fall, a novel about the space shuttle Challenger disaster, and Leaving Orbit: Notes from the Last Days of American Spaceflight, which won the Graywolf Press nonfiction prize and was chosen as one of the top ten books of 2015 by New York Times critic Michiko Kakutani. The recipient of an NEA fellowship, a Bread Loaf fellowship, and a Hopwood Award for the Novel, she is now working on a memoir co-written with astronaut Scott Kelly about his year in space.

At NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, an exhaust plume forms under the mobile launcher platform on Launch Pad 39A as space shuttle Atlantis lifts off on the STS-132 mission to the International Space Station at 2:20 p.m. EDT on May 14.
STS-132 is the 132nd shuttle flight, the 32nd for Atlantis, and the 34th shuttle mission dedicated to station assembly and maintenance.
